I love samples. I love
little samples of makeup and spices and the little snacks to sample at farmers’
markets, Whole Foods and especially Bristol Farms. Their samples are the
fanciest. Although I used to like to get perfume samples, I don’t any more. After
many years I have my perfume, and I am comfortable and secure with my choice.
But I do really love the little sample-size perfume bottles. They are just so dear. Same goes for samples of shampoo, conditioner and all sorts of fun beauty products.

Churning Things Up.
My house flooded a couple of
weeks ago. There was some damage, but not a ton. Mostly it was a big pain and a
big bummer. But, after a week, most of the repairs had been completed by the
workmen , the clean-up had been done (by me), and save for the warped hardwood
floors and the stench of mildew, all was back to normal.

Lip-Face, Mr. California & The Shad Roe.
I’ve never had a cavity.
Never until a couple of weeks ago, that is. I only go to one dentist and that’s
my dentist back in Richmond. Other than Dr. Fitzugh, who passed away when I was
a little girl, Dr. Wade has been my only dentist. And Dr. Wade actually took
over Dr. Fitzhugh’s practice. Everything stayed the same. Even the mobiles hanging from the ceiling. And
Myrtle, the receptionist. I love Myrtle.

Out of the Past(ure)
Lately I
have been homesick. Really homesick. In no small part for calm and simplicity.
Many things recently have been so Sisyphean here in my City of Angels. Or so it seems. Everything is so big and heavy and more difficult than necessary. People appear to be filled with drama or anger, or both, and take it out on the other drivers (or pedestrians) on the road, the Census taker on the other end of the phone line, or their server in a restaurant. I can hardly say I blame them. It’s a vicious cycle that I have fallen prey to as a result of my own recent circumstances: the nightmare of my unpredictable and mean-spirited next door neighbor, my evil, evil landlord (EVIL. GRR.), Beso’s doctor who won’t call me back, running into one someone I’d rather never lay eyes on again during lunch at Cheebo, money, driving, gas prices, traffic, crowds. A little jaunt from Point A to Point B, more often than not, seems a fairly substantial undertaking. Not to worry; buck up I will.

Shopping.
I’ve never really been a
shopper, per se. Apparently I used to have small anxiety attacks at the mere
thought of going into a shoe store when I was younger. I guess the shoe
salespeople at Thom McCann really
upset me. Likewise – and a lot more recently - I would get antsy at the thought
of the greeters at The Gap. Their Black Hole Sun like smiles and overly effervescent and solicitous welcomes kind of freaked me out. I
would find myself zipping in and trying desperately to dodge them. They always
won.

Another Walk on the Wild Side...
I have a bit of a wild side. I guess I always have. I think I get it from my dad. There have been times it’s been more prominent and times when it’s been more dormant. Admittedly, this side is in a welcomed dormant stage, and has been for a while now. This current stage was preceded by a particularly wild, wild streak. I can attribute that period, in large, to The Coach and Horses. I can attribute the current, dormant, period, in large, to the closing of The Coach and Horses almost two years ago.

Egg (on) Thy Neighbor
Borrow an egg from my neighbor? Apparently not. My neighbor, Meg, happens to live within spitting distance of my house--yep, right next door, up close. Perish the thought; I would never , nor have I ever, spit at Meg or her house. I do, however, think Meg has given some thought to spitting at me.

Blame It On the Rain.
Yesterday was another rainy Sunday.
That’s fine, really. We’ve had the driest Winter that I can recall for some
time. The city, and my garden, could certainly use the moisture beating. But
I’m so anxious for sunshiny days and hitting the streets on my new, extremely
cool, bike (with a basket!).

Winner, Winner, Chicken Dinner
I looked the phrase up. Years ago every Las Vegas casino had a
three-piece chicken dinner with potato and veggie for $1.79. A standard bet
back then was $2.00, hence when you won a bet you had enough for a chicken
dinner. Winner, winner...

Taking a Leap
This is a leap year. Last
Wednesday was the twenty-ninth day of February. A date that occurs once every
four years.
"A leap year is a year containing one additional
day in order to keep the calendar year synchronized with the astronomical year. Because seasons and astronomical
events do not repeat in a whole
number of days, a calendar that had the same number of days in
each year would, over time, drift with respect to the event it was supposed to
track. By occasionally inserting an additional day or month into the year, the
drift can be corrected." -Katherine Morgan in Skeans
