Nashville is hot stuff right now - it's
quite the culinary darling, actually. In addition to our hefty list
of restaurants to visit, one of my closest friends from LA, Chris, is
from Nashville, and his family all live there. His brother-in-law runs a restaurant that I had been hearing about for some time.

Movin' On - New Orleans City Limits.
Another long day in the car making it
the rest of the way through Texas and into some more familiar
territory. Things went from arid to humid pretty fast as we rolled
into the swamp lands of Southern Louisiana. And, although I had been
enjoying myself immensely, wide eyed and fascinated with the new
places I was experiencing, I was eager to return to climates, time
zones, cities and cuisines that were more familiar. Louisiana was the
first stop on our trajectory that fit the bill. Hello, N'awlins!

Deep in the heart of Texas.
We arrived at our next stop after a long day on the road. We had driven all day and only been in one state – so you know we must have been in Texas. I was extra excited because A) I was meeting an old friend I hadn't seen since college, and B) I had never, ever been to Texas before. One thing for sure; there would be BBQ.

California, Here We Go.
We've been plotting and planning for
close to eight months. We've been roommates with boxes and
bubble wrap for about as many weeks. Address changes, car selling,
new banks, lists and lists and lists, goodbye breakfasts, lunches and
dinners, goodbye glasses (that turned into bottles) of wine – all
of this, leading up to a moment. The moment we drive away from the
City of Angels towards our new home, three thousand miles away in
Richmond, Virginia. And that moment happened last Thursday.

Tick Tock, You Don't Stop.
It's hard to believe that it has come
down to a matter of days before we hit the road. So hard to believe,
in fact, that it does not seem real. We are living amongst a landscape of boxes, bubble wrap and newspaper. We have had two garage sales,
and donated all unsold items to
charity. The good bye dinners and lunches fill up most of our
non-packing, non-sleeping time. I even ate a Lean Cuisine frozen
dinner the other day to try to whittle away at all of the food in the
freezer – because you know I just cannot let it go to waste (I'm
not even quite sure how a Lean Cuisine made its way into our freezer
in the first place). All of these things - the boxes, sales, good bye
functions and frozen dinners and it still does not seem real.

I'm the Dog Walker.
Oddly enough, I've been to very
few weddings. A lot of people complain about weddings, like they're a
drag or something. I love them. I love looking at all of the people,
watching the families interact, figuring out who knows whom, who
tolerates whom, you get the idea. I love to watch the eccentric
great aunt with her shaky, little hands, clutching her champagne
glass smeared with red lipstick smudges around the rim and crumbs of
God knows what permanently lodged in the corners of her mouth. I love
the awkward little children, dressed up like adults, the boys looking
miserable and uncomfortable and the girls loving their princess hair
and dresses and all of the attention. I love watching the bride's
second cousin flirting with the groom's best man's brother, and
sneaking off to hook up after just enough champagne, wine and
cocktails to chalk it up to 'weddings'.

Country Mice
Right before we drove away from San Francisco, Fred's aunt, Jenny-King, told us about all of the wild blackberries, ripe and ready to harvest, growing all around the family cabin in Inverness. And though I am a total weirdo about almost everything fruit-related, I do love a blackberry. Perhaps it's their tartness. Jenny-King then went on to tell us about her recipe for a blackberry crumble that she and her girls loved to make each year when the berries are in season and growing rampant around the Inverness house.

Check One-Two.
Fred and I just returned from our final trip to San Francisco before we embark on our Eastward adventure. Our last trip, period,
before we head East. So, of course, I had a few restaurants, two in particular, to cross off my never ending list. One was
Mission Chinese Food.
I have been trying forever to find the perfect Chinese food spot. One
that's not trying to keep up with the healthy Jones' (I want some of
that MSG, umami, and some greasiness, dammit), one that's not too far
off the beaten path (no molecular gastronomy here, please), but one
that is trying to insert a modicum of creativity into the food. I
have been coming up empty. To the universe's credit, I haven't been making any backbreaking attempts either. It would certainly not fall into 'my
life mission' category. But, whenever I crave Chinese food I am
reminded of the whole issue.

Put your Heart (of Palm) Into It.
I get a lot of
food magazines. I actually get way too many food magazines. The
problem, the reason why I say way too many, is that I insist on
reading every word and staring at every detail of every photograph –
and all in one sitting. Maybe everyone does that, but I feel like
magazines, except for the literary ones, are more often enjoyed in a
leaf-through-it-casually-and-pick-it-up-and-down-over-time sort of
way. But me, once I pick it up and open the cover, I'm in it to win
it until I flip that very last page. Kind of like me and a bag of chips.

The Road Taken
I started writing this post over a month ago. Since then I have started and stopped quite a few times. Then I just stopped. And stared. Nothing. Then I started again, but didn't know where to take it. I wasn't sure why. Normally once I start something, anything, I stay right with it until I finish. But this one is different. Change is afoot.
